LEUCOTHOE - The Leucothoe axillaris Curly Red also known as Dog Hobble Curly Red is a low growing evergreen shrub that produces thick curling leaves that can grow to 5 cm in length. This attractive plant changes colour throughout the year. The foliage takes on a reddish tone in the colder months of Autumn and winter. The red colouring then fades in the Spring with the leaves turning green in Summer. Clusters of small white flowers appear in the Spring too. GROWING - Leucothoe Curly Red is an easy to care plant, that can grow to between 100 and 150 cm in height with an eventual spread of 150cm if not maintained. This hardy shrub requires a sheltered location in partial to full shade. It is ideal for growing in a pot or container or for filling gaps in garden borders in moist well draining acid soil. If the soil conditions are more alkaline, mixing in some ericaceous compost will help increase the acidic levels in the soil. ONGOING CARE - This shrub is low maintenance, so very little pruning is required but can be undertaken to help maintain a more compact rounded shape. Prune in late Spring after flowering to remove dead, diseased, or misplaced branches. If pruning is undertaken too early in the Winter, this can lead to frost damage.
