Thompson & Morgan Hibiscus ‘Oiseau Bleu’, or ‘Bluebird’ as it is often named, requires little maintenance but enjoys a long, hot summer to produce the most stunning blue hibiscus flowers. Hibiscus flowers are some of the most exotic in the garden. These hardy shrubs are one of the last to break into leaf in late spring. But once they do, they’re clothed in pretty three-lobed foliage until a late summer array of tropical, silky blooms that last right through into October, when much else has faded. Grow Thompson & Morgan Hibiscus ‘Oiseau Bleu’ on rich, fertile, reliably moist, well-drained soil in full sun. When growing hibiscus plants in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Feed and water hibiscus regularly until fully established. Apply a dry mulch such as bark chips to the base of the plant in autumn to protect from winter cold. Prune hibiscus in late spring, removing any stems that have died back or been damaged over winter. Hibiscus are often one of the last shrubs in the garden to break bud, so be patient with plants that are slow to start into growth in spring – they may remain dormant until May! Culinary note: The flowers can infused to make a mildly citrus flavoured tea. The petals can be cut and added to fruit salads too. Ideal For: Low Maintenance Gardens, Exotic Gardens, Specimen Plant Hardiness: Hardy Position In: Full Sun Height: Up to 300cm (118.1in) Spread: Up to 200cm (78.7in) Ease of Growing: Easy for All Ease of Aftercare: Easy for All
