Fully double blooms in a vibrant colour range glisten above a mass of feathery blue-green foliage. These dainty hardy annuals are tougher than they appear and positively thrive on poor, dry soils. The papery flowers attract bees and hoverflies, and make excellent, if short-lived, cut flowers. California poppies are easy to grow in beds and borders, or let them self-seed throughout gravel gardens to form natural drifts. Flowers July-August. Height 20-30cm (8-12"); spread 20-30cm (8-12"). The papery flowers of the Jelly Bean variety is a real gift in the garden and allotment as they attract both bees and hoverflies, so are perfect for planting near veg and fruit if you are keen to engage in companion planting and pollination support for your crops. Hoverflies especially are very beneficial insects and valuable friends in the garden as they are both pollinators and allies in the fight against aphids, thrips, scale insects and caterpillars. Supplied as 1 x packet of seed (average packet content 150 seeds). Choose a sunny position. Sow direct into finely raked, moist, warm soil where the plants are to flower at a depth of 6mm covering the seed lightly with soil. Germination 10-14 days. Thin seedlings in stages until they are 25-30cm apart. Alternatively, for early flowering sow seed during August/September for flowers earlier.
