Buxus sempervirens are some of the most useful evergreen shrubs and also one of the most recognisable. A stalwart of the cottage garden and stately homes, they have traditionally been used to create neat hedge borders and a range of shaped topiary. They are slow growing and rather compact which ensures that very little maintenance is needed in order for these hardy shrubs to continue to look fabulous. However when the time does come, they have the ability to withstand regular clippings and therefore maintain that wanted shape and glossy green colour all year round. These hardy architectural show stoppers thrive in any fertile, moist, well drained garden soil but are also perfect for use with a container and a soil based compost, growing well in sunny or semi shade conditions.
