SHADE LOVING - Hardy ferns are perennials that thrive in shade or low light conditions making them popular with UK gardeners. They are easy to plant and settle in quickly to their new growing conditions. They are best planted in Spring or Autumn, as this gives them time to settle in before any extremes of hot or cold weather. GROWING CONDITIONS - Ferns are easy to maintain and prefer well draining, moist, lightweight soil that is rich in humus. Sandy or humus soils with good drainage are ideal, but heavy clay soils should be avoided or amended to improve aeration and drainage. In the Spring after the last frost, remove old fronds to allow new growth to uncurl.
