Hawthorn Hedging Plants area a delightful plant which forms the basis of most Native British Hedging. Delicate scented white and pale pink flowers from April to June give way to hawthorn berries or haws in the Autumn, that the birds love to eat. Small green summer leaves turn vibrant reds oranges and yellows adding beautiful colour to your hedge in Autumn. Hawthorn is fast growing and forms a hedge with lots of tiny twigs and branches which provide support to other trees and plants in the hedge, and makes a super natural habitat for birds, insects and small mammals. It is also thorny so is always included in security hedging. Hawthorn also makes a beautiful small stand-alone tree and can grow to about 4m tall. It is fast growing. We recommend that you trim your hawthorn once a year in Autumn after the birds have finished nesting. We recommend 5 plants per metre in a double zig-zag row for a thick hedge, but you can get away with 3-4 per metre in a staggered row if you don’t mind waiting an extra year or two to form a thick hedge. Keep them well watered – especially in the Spring and Summer in the first year of planting. If you are not sure how many plants you need or which varieties suit your garden please just contact or call us and we will be happy to offer friendly advice!
