Crab Apple Hedging Plants are fast growing. They can be planted as a stand-alone tree or as part of a mixed hedgerow. Delightful scented pink and white flowers in spring give way to wild crab apples that the birds love to eat. Small green summer leaves turn yellow and then brown in the autumn adding beautiful colour to your hedge. Crab Apple is fairly fast growing and forms a hedge with lots of tiny twigs and branches. This provides a wonderful native habitat for birds, insects and small mammals. Crab apple is a wonderful wildlife hedgerow plant with white flowers in Spring loved by Bees and insects followed in early Autumn with small apples – although sour and woody to our taste these are loved by many insects, birds and other wildlife. We recommend 5 plants per metre in a double zig-zag row for a thick hedge, but you can get away with 3-4 per metre in a staggered row if you don’t mind waiting an extra year or two to form a thick hedge. Keep them well watered – especially in the Spring and Summer in the first year of planting. If you are not sure how many plants you need or which varieties suit your garden please just contact or call us and we will be happy to offer friendly advice!
